My Story: From Cleaner to Supervisor

It was back in January 2018 when I came to Qatar as a cleaner. I worked as a cleaner for about 10 months, and I had different crazy experiences! Am I still a cleaner? No, I’m now a Cleaning Supervisor. Believe me, I know this industry inside and out, having worked in it for the past five years, now going on my sixth.

In my next post, I’ll take you through the Cleaning Supervisor’s job, but today, we’re focusing on the cleaner role. I want to take you through everything: what you are supposed to do, how much you will get paid, how many hours you will work, and the benefits and disadvantages.

Please make sure you give this a thumbs up, share it with family and friends, and subscribe if you haven’t already! Now, let’s get into it.

Who Can Be a Cleaner in Qatar?

A cleaner can be a lady or a male. Here in Qatar, we have different nationalities working as cleaners, mostly from Africa and Asia. If you’re Kenyan, Ugandan, Ghanaian, Filipino, Indian, Sri Lankan, Bengali, or Nepalese—I have worked with people from all these countries. The job is done by both men and women from many different backgrounds.

What Does a Cleaner in Qatar Actually Do?

As a cleaner, your main responsibility is to keep the place you are assigned tidy. We have clients that give our companies these jobs, and you have to keep the place clean as per the client’s expectations—and hopefully, even exceed them!

You may be taken to different locations, such as:

  • Malls
  • Schools
  • Hospitals
  • Offices
  • Parks
  • Residential buildings

Your tasks will involve cleaning everything from top to bottom. This includes:

  • Cleaning toilets
  • Wiping down offices, chairs, and sofas
  • Cleaning floors (scrubbing, mopping, polishing)
  • Glass and window cleaning
  • High-level cleaning

If you are someone who gets disgusted easily, just know that this is part of the job. It doesn’t mean you’ll be put in toilets the whole time, as you will likely be working with a team. You might be placed on toilet duty, office duty, or glass cleaning duty. You should be prepared to clean anything and everything to make the place tidy.

“But I Don’t Have Experience!” – Don’t Worry About Training

Maybe you’ve never had a cleaning job before and you think you don’t have experience. Let me tell you, when you get to Qatar, many companies will take you through professional training.

They will teach you how to use different cleaning machines. You’ll get certificates for some training sessions. Some companies, like mine, will even provide training in First Aid and Firefighting. This is important because you might be dealing with electricity or hot water, and you need to know how to handle incidents.

Even if you have worked as a cleaner in another company, you will still be required to go through the new company’s training because every place has different rules and procedures. You will become a professional, so you do not need to worry about what you do or don’t know.

Let’s Talk Money: Salary, Hours, and Benefits

How many hours will you work? According to Qatar’s labor law, the standard workday is 8 hours. However, some companies may require you to work 9, 10, or even 12 hours, depending on the contract. Any hours worked beyond the standard 8 hours will be paid as overtime, which is also regulated by the labor law.

How much will you get paid? The minimum wage you can expect monthly is Qatari Riyals. It’s important to understand that this is your basic salary.

On top of this, most companies provide essential benefits. This means things like food, accommodation, transport, and Wi-Fi are provided by the company. That Riyals is your money to keep.

  • Accommodation: Provided.
  • Transportation: Provided (to and from work).
  • Wi-Fi: Often provided at the accommodation.
  • Food: This can be handled in two ways. Some companies provide cooked meals. Other companies give you a “food allowance” (extra money) so you can buy and cook your own food. In my company, for example, the ladies receive a food allowance, while the men are given cooked food.

How to Find a Cleaning Job in Qatar

You can find these jobs in two main ways:

  1. Recruitment Agencies: You can use an agency from your home country. I used to share agency recommendations, but some are not doing so well these days, so I don’t want to recommend a specific one right now. Please give me time to find better ones to share!
  2. Online Job Sites: If you don’t know an agency, feel free to go to Indeed.com and search for employers hiring cleaners in Qatar.

A quick note: some of these jobs are listed for people who are already in Qatar. But don’t get tired of applying! You may be lucky and find an employer who wants to hire someone new from a different country. Just go and apply.

Nailing the Interview: Tips and Common Questions

This is the best part because I know these questions like the back of my hand! Don’t be afraid. We all have the basic skills because we grew up cleaning our own houses. You just have to be confident.

Here are some common questions and how to handle them:

  • “Tell me about yourself.” As usual, introduce yourself. Don’t forget to mention that you are trustworthy, a polite person, and a fast learner.
  • “Have you worked as a cleaner before?” Even if you haven’t worked for a company, tell them yes! Frame your experience from home. Say, “Yes, I have the skills. I have done this in my family home, and I also used to clean our church/school.” Tell them what you have done. You have to add a little salt, but make sure it’s believable.
  • “What type of machines do you know how to use?” Be honest. If you have used a vacuum cleaner or a jet pressure washer, mention it. If you haven’t used any machines, just tell them: “I have not used professional machines before because where I worked, we did everything manually. However, I am a fast learner and I am willing to learn every single machine your company has.”
  • “What types of floors do you know how to clean?” You know this! You just don’t realize it might be an interview question. Talk about the floors you’ve cleaned at home: carpeted floors, tile floors, concrete floors, wooden floors. Think about how you cleaned them. For a carpet, you can say you used a soft brush and soap since you didn’t have a machine.
  • “What type of chemicals have you used?” This is a major question that will likely be in your interview. Tell them the names of the detergents and cleaning powders you use in your country. We have all used them for cleaning floors or clothes. Be sure you know what you’re saying, but be honest.

You know these things; you just don’t know that you know them! My advice is to re-watch this video, write down these questions, and then Google the answers to learn more.
